One thing most people forget is that you can actually catch genital herpes from oral sex i.e a man or a woman receiving oral sex. A lot of people have the cold sore virus which is from the same family as it is easily spread through kissing.
So a HSV-1 outbreak can be easily transferred to the genital area:

(extreme example, I don’t think you would allow this girl to have oral sex with you). Remember you don’t need to have such a visible outbreak, the virus can still be active or asymptomatic.
